Site Surveys
SRSL offer an acoustic (swath-sonar) seafloor-mapping
service which, when linked with DGPS, enables accurate positioning,
mapping & cataloguing of bathymetric features & sediment types.
Large scale acoustic mapping surveys can be performed and calibrated
with ground truth (grab sampling & video) surveys. The data we
collect also allows the identification of physical & biological
habitat areas (biotopes) of interest. GIS and cartographic services are
also available.
- Multi-beam bathymetric survey for mapping of the seabed as well as characterising habitats and seafloor sediment processes. The SAMS’ multibeam is a beam-mounted SeaBat 8124 echosounder, fitted to the R.V Calanus.
- Side-scan sonar surveys are used to define objects and sediment structures on the seafloor depending on their acoustic properties. SAMS’ side-scan sonar is a dual frequency, 100 and 455 kHz, Klein 3000 model.
- Baseline geochemical surveys to determine existing contamination levels and sediment profile.
- Near and far-field assessment of sedimentation rates and changes to sedimentation rates
- Modelling of sediment dispersal and changes to distribution of sedimentation
- Sediment loading of the water column (suspended particulate matter)
- Data handling, analysis and reporting is provided as a service in support of all geophysical surveys
