The European Centre for Marine Biotechnology aims to be the business incubator of choice for new and emerging marine biotechnology companies in the UK. By establishing a growing cluster of activity and international networks it strives to be the premier site for innovative growth and development within this emerging sector.
The aim is to provide a supportive and enterprising business environment in which 'start-up' and established companies can flourish and build upon the synergies of the site, proximity to established marine science research, a talented resource pool and the associated support services of an international marine laboratory.
The centre has benefited from significant enterprise company support and potential clients are encouraged to open dialogues with Argyll and Islands Enterprise as part of the decisions making process. The centre opened in June 2004 and currently has three tenants occupying over 75% of the available floor space.
The facility offers fully fitted laboratory space along with modular office units to accommodate a wide variety of business needs. Shared services such as meeting rooms, canteen and library facilities along with access to a diverse range of analytical equipment enable growing companies to obtain the results they need without significant outlay.

Aquapharm Bio-discovery Ltd is one of the UK’s premier marine biotechnology companies focusing on leading the way in the discovery of novel bioactives and innovative production systems from marine microbes. The company has a substantial collection of unique marine bacteria and fungi isolated from diverse and extreme marine habitats from which it derives and develops new biologically active natural products with applications in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical sectors.
GlycoMar is a marine biotechnology company that exploits natural products from marine invertebrate glycobiology to advance human health. GlycoMar is an innovative drug discovery and development company pursuing untapped biological and chemical diversity to identify new drug candidates from marine organisms.
