The SAMS Biofuel Centre is a world-leader in cutting-edge algal biofuel research. Our scientists have expertise in both micro- and macro-algal strain selection, cultivation methods and up-scaling feasibility. Through access to this core of unique expertise, SRSL provide expert guidance and consultancy which is firmly based on scientific research and years of hands-on experience; a gem much sought-after within this rapidly expanding market sector.
Current projects include the use of novel micro-algae for biodiesel production and the use of macro-algae for anaerobic digestion and fermentation to bioethanol.
SELECTED PROJECTS

  • SAMS is the lead partner in the EU-funded, €6 million BioMara project, which is set to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of producing mari-fuels from marine biomass. The biomass being investigated is derived from both macroalgae and microalgae sources, which may represent an economically and environmentally sustainable renewable fuel source. The project focuses on the regions of Western Scotland, Northern Ireland and the border part of Ireland. The Biomara project will also help service local public transport infrastructure and build on the regions’ technology base.

  • Whitby Kelp Farming Feasibility Study, Scarborough Council, 2009-10
  • Mapping of Intertidal Seaweed Resources of the Outer Hebrides (with Hebridean Seaweed), Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, 2010
  • Kelp Cultivation Trials, Scottish Enterprise, 2010-11
  • SAMS also has a number of other ongoing high-profile projects addressing the various barriers and constraints for industry and technology in bringing micro- and macro-algal biofuels to market in the UK and overseas.
